Dr. Alec Miller is a clinical psychologist, teacher, researcher, treatment developer and disseminator of evidence-based interventions to clinical settings, schools and organizations worldwide. He is Co-Founder of Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants (CBC), a clinical, training, and research center based in White Plains and Manhattan. He is also a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY. Thirdly, Dr Miller also serves as the President of the Access Psychology Foundation (APF), a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to overcome mental health disparities among historically under-represented populations by increasing access to evidence-based prevention, treatment, and training.

Dr. Miller specializes in the treatment of stress management, adolescent depression, suicide and self-injury, borderline personality disorder, as well as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). He is a Certified Individual DBT Clinician and his DBT Programs at CBC are the first Certified DBT Programs in NY State as deemed by the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification. He received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and his doctorate in clinical psychology from the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology of Yeshiva University. From 1995 to 2015, he served as Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychology, Director of the Adolescent Depression and Suicide Program, Associate Director of the Psychology Training, and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY.

Since 1995, he has headed clinical-research teams adapting DBT for outpatient suicidal multi-problem adolescents as well as contributing to the adaptation of DBT for other populations and settings including schools. He has received federal, state, and private funding for his research and has been an invited member of NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) consensus meetings regarding adolescent suicide. He has authored and co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. In addition Dr. Miller has co-authored four books, including the three leading textbooks on DBT with adolescents, titled, Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Suicidal Adolescents (2007), “DBT Skills Training with Adolescents (2015), and DBT Skills in Schools: The Skills Training for Emotional Problem-Solving for Adolescents (STEPS-A) (2016). The fourth book he co-authored is a book titled Childhood Maltreatment, Advances in Psychotherapy-Evidence Based Practice (2006). Upon invitation by the American Psychological Association, Dr. Miller developed a psychotherapy training video titled, DBT for Multi-Problem Adolescents (2007). In addition, he recently co-developed and released an online Adolescent DBT Skills Course for professionals and produced by Psychwire.

Dr. Miller serves on several boards and advisory committees, in addition to the Access Psychology Foundation. These include serving as Board Member on the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification (DBT-LBC), a clinical advisor to BeMeHealth with Teens in Mind, a steering committee member of the World DBT Association (WDBTA), and an Advisory Board member of the IDEAL School in Manhattan. He is an invited member of the International Academy for Suicide Research, a scientific advisory council member of the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, and a past consultant on the FDA's Suicide Classification Project. Dr. Miller previously served as Associate Editor and the Editorial Board of the journal, Cognitive and Behavioral Practice (C&BP). He also serves as a reviewer for over a dozen professional journals. Furthermore, he’s a member and serves on the program committee of the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT), he’s a founding member of NYC-CBT, and serves as a scientific advisor to the National Educational Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder (NEA-BPD). He previously served as a member of the Board of Overseers of the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology of Yeshiva University.

Dr. Miller has received numerous awards and honors, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology. He was nominated and selected to become a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA), in both Division 12 (Clinical Psychology) and Division 53 (Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology), as well as a Fellow of the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) for his outstanding and enduring contributions to the field. He has served on the Board of Directors of APA, Division 12, and is past president of the Clinical Emergencies and Crises section. Additionally, he also served as the 2007 Division 12 Program Chair of the APA Convention. In 2002, Dr. Miller received the Service Award from the International Society for the Improvement and Teaching of DBT (ISITDBT), served as the ISITDBT Conference Chair in 2005 and 2006, and served on its Executive Board until 2018. In 2008, he received the Lauretta Bender Honored Lecturer Award and in 2013 received the Rhodes Spirit of Leadership Award.

Dr. Miller has conducted over 1,500 lectures and workshops worldwide to both lay and professional audiences. He was the lead trainer and co-investigator of the first randomized trial of adolescent DBT conducted in Oslo, Norway. He is a consultant to numerous DBT research studies internationally as well as to over 150 schools that have or are currently implementing DBT in Schools, using a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). He truly enjoys presenting to parents, teachers and administrators his perspective on social emotional learning and his rationale and methodology for bringing both Comprehensive School Based-DBT (CSB-DBT) and Universal Classroom-DBT(UC-DBT) to school age students.

As a clinician, Dr. Miller is a practitioner of CBT and DBT and treats adults, adolescents, couples and families in White Plains, NY. His clinical expertise has been highlighted by various media outlets including the New York Times, CNN, ABC News, CBS TV, MSNBC, PBS TV, Fox News, Teen People Magazine, Redbook, WebMD, the Associated Press, and Voice of America.
