This intensive 5-day CBT training program was created by Dr. Lata McGinn in response to multiple requests from clinicians who have begun learning cognitive behavior therapy through self-study or workshops and are looking to increase their ability to apply CBT concepts and strategies in their current practice.

Clinicians also have the opportunity to receive ongoing consultation following the training. The CBT foundational qualifies you to apply to become a Certified Affiliate through the Academy of Cognitive Therapy by providing you with the required hours of training specifically in cognitive therapy.

The training will cover a range of strategies, foundational to advanced, including:

  • Creating a CBT case conceptualization with the client’s participation to produce meaningful treatment plans and guide therapeutic interventions
  • Defining behavioral targets with precision and measuring treatment outcomes;
  • Utilizing specific cognitive and behavioral strategies, including psycho-education, cognitive restructuring, behavioral experiments, and additional self-management training
  • Adapting CBT with couples, parents, and children/adolescents.

Learning Objectives:

  • List scope of mental health issues in a post-pandemic world.
  • Define CBT.
  • Describe CBT history, theory and how it differs from other psychotherapies.
  • Describe evidence base of CBT.
  • Describe goals, objectives, and processes of CBT.
  • Explain the structure of a CBT session.
  • Utilize cognitive and behavioral strategies using lectures, videos, discussions, and demonstrations.
  • Practice cognitive and behavioral strategies using role plays to treat stress, worry, general anxiety, rumination, panic, agoraphobia, social anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, selective mutism, oppositional defiant disorder, and relationship problems.
  • Demonstrate application of skills in cognitive and behavioral therapies.
  • Identify, label, and assess symptoms.
  • Practice cross-sectional and longitudinal CBT sessions case conceptualization
  • skill to understand and decrease problem behaviors.
  • Define behavioral targets with precision based on values and goals.
  • Measure treatment outcomes.
  • Produce treatment plans and guide therapeutic interventions using CBT case conceptualizations.
  • Explain cognitive models, assumptions, processes, and treatments.
  • Define cognitive distortions.
  • Manage dysfunctional cognitions using cognitive restructuring and cognitive delusion.
  • Provide rationale for exposure and response prevention.
  • Assess fears and create exposure hierarchy.
  • Conduct in-vivo, imaginal, simulated, and interoceptive exposures.
  • Monitor and process exposure using cognitive processing, inhibitory learning, and behavioral experiments.
  • Assess, create hierarchy, and prevent active avoidance.
  • Define, explain rationale, and practice physiological strategies.
  • Define, explain rationale and practice behavioral activation.
  • Define, explain rationale and practice problem solving.
  • Define, explain rationale and practice communication and social skills.
  • Define, explain, and practice behavior modification and parent training.

Continuing Education

Participants will receive 35 Continuing Education credit hours (35 CE credits) for New York social workers and all psychologists. CBC also offers other CE credits throughout this year. This course will also provide required hours of training in CBT necessary to apply to become a certified diplomate through the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (A-CBT).

Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants, LLP (CBC) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CBC is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s state Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0096; and by the New York State Education Department’s State Board of Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #@SW-0219. CBC maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
