DBT is a now an established evidence-based treatment for multi-problem and self-harming adolescents. Dr. Alec Miller and his colleagues will teach the theories, structure, and practice of the DBT model, including strategies for individual sessions, skills training groups, inter-session coaching, and the effective management of a consultation team.

The instructors will utilize various teaching formats including didactics, videos, role-play demonstrations and participant exercises. Research has shown DBT with adolescents to effectively reduce self-harm behaviors, depression, hopelessness, dropout from treatment, psychiatric hospitalization, substance use and interpersonal difficulties.

Workshop Objectives:

The training will cover a range of strategies, and participants will:

      • List and explain unique mental health issues arising in a post-pandemic world
      • Explain the biosocial theory of borderline personality disorder and emotion dysregulation
      • Assess multi-problem youth
      • Demonstrate use of orientation and commitment strategies effective for teenagers and families
      • Explain the treatment structure and targets for multi-problem, high-risk adolescents
      • List and explain the various change and acceptance strategies used in individual DBT
      • List and explain the adolescent-family dialectical dilemmas
      • Explain dialectical thinking and acting
      • Teach dialectics to teens and parents
      • Create and maintain adolescent skills training groups with and without caregivers

Continuing Education

Participants will receive 35 Continuing Education credit hours (35 CE credits) for New York social workers and all psychologists. CBC also offers other CE credits throughout this year. This course will also provide required hours of training in DBT necessary to apply to become certified through the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification (DBT-LBC).

Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants LLP (CBC) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CBC is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0096; and by the New York State Education Department's State Board of Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0219. CBC maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
